Rainforest Understory Level
From the Rainforest Floor Level to the CanopyThe levels of the rainforest, also called layer, consist of several parts like the emergent layer, canopy (umbrella), the understory layer and the floor of the forest. The Emergent Layer is the top part of the rain forest with tall trees up to 200 feet showing up above the canopy like a city tower or a skyscraper. The Canopy is like an umbrella or a roof for the underlying parts of the forest. A way to explore the canopy or overstory with its plants and animal species from a different, 70 or 100 feet high perspective is by a canopy tour using special climbing equipment. The scenery is spectacular climbing from one wooden platform to another. The wet Understory Layer is the low light part with high humidity, dense flora and fauna and small trees. The shaded Forest Floor is a layer of fallen and rotting leaves, fruits and trees waiting decompose in a very short time.
